Office of Elementary and Secondary Education

The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) is a division of the U.S. Department of Education. The OESE is charged with overseeing and improving the quality of teaching and learning that takes place in elementary, middle, and high school education settings and ensuring that children, youth, and families have equal opportunity to access education services.

History

In 1867, the Department of Education was established under President Andrew Johnson, yet formal organization of the OESE came nearly 100 years later. The 1960s brought a climate of political and social revolution, which led to an increase in federal funding for education and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965.
